External Video Card
on Jan 17, 2012 at 7:21:13 am

Dear all,
I hope this is the correct place to create this thread, I am looking for some tech help/advice
Lately I have been travelling quite a lot working with AE. For my sets I need a output preview (full HD) on a projector. Unfortunatelly, my equipment (mac book or mac book pro) usually gets frozeen when doing this. I can not carry a big tower from here to there and I would like to know if any of you can recomend me a powerfull external (usb, I guess) video card around 500USD that could make the system run smoothly.
Thanks in advance for your interest!
Best,
Diego

Thanks a lot Steve! I will check it.
Is there any characteristic I should check in other models?

I am afraid I can only use USB 2.0 :( No way of getting Intensity.
Also, a good support for more than one screen could be desirable. I am trying to find but it seems I am not looking for properly.
I do not expect an extra input, but an external card to do the processing. Any idea?

Diego, there's no way you're going to be able to export video of any useable resolution out of USB2; the interface was never designed for such an application and its bandwidth is just way too low. Really, your only options are specialised breakout boxes like the Intensity one mentioned or an additional video card. If you're using a laptop without in-built support for more than one monitor, I'm afraid you're out of luck. Unless your laptop has USB3 or Thunderbolt.

i don't think this has been released yet, but this page shows a pcie expansion chassis that connects to thunderbolt:

http://www.anandtech.com/show/5352/msis-gus-ii-external-gpu-via-thunderbolt

that company also sells similar chassis that connect via expresscard slots, though i think they are windows only, but you might check their website for more info:

aja also has a similar video i/o product to the decklink product, but it connects via an express card:

Thanks a lot, Paul and Kevin.
Yes, it seems I am out of luck :P unlesa i could set a usb3.0 in my MacBookPro (i have to check the expasion port but Ibam afraid i can not) i need thunderbolt, ehat means a new computer. The pity is that i can not aford a new macPro (and it is a bit useless considering traveling) so i am afraid i a bit sc****d.
Well, hoping for a thunderbolt mac book pro! Too bad I bought mine ine month before it appeared :P

If you have an ExpressCard slot (on an older MBP 15, or a pre-ThunderBolt MBP 17), you could use a something in the Matrox MX02 family.

Of course, your system shouldn't be freezing just because you're connecting an external display to it. Perhaps that's worth troubleshooting?

Once again, thanks a lot, Kevin and Walter
@Walter: the system is not freezing becoise of and extra monitor but because of After Effects making the processing for video output preview ob a projector, that is why i am looking for more video power
@Kevin: excuse me for being such a newbie (also for my English, it is not my first language) but then do you think that using that usb 3.0 adaptor and the card I would have extra video power as I am looking for?
Best to everyone, you guys are being really suportive :)

Once again, thanks a lot for everything :)
I think I am going to try something with the express card. As soon as I have some information, I would post it :)

Thanks a lot,
Diego
