Hi,

I wondered if anyone could give me a hand with learning some new transitions.

The array of transitions available in FCP is limited for those wishing for a non-tacky look for their video :).

Transitions that I have seen, but cannot do yet are the one where a person walks past the camera and the clip changes from one to the next as they walk. I guess a simple case of masking a path? And where it looks like the camera quickly turns to the right/left to reveal the next clip. Again, I guess you do this by placing both clips in AE and simply keying one clip to move off screen while the other comes into view (stitched together) - but very quickly. Maybe add motion blur.

But any other creative use of transitions or correcting my methods above would be really appreciated.

Kind regards,

Olly Lawer

Yes, you've described how to accomplish these transitions in AE.

FCP7 introduced Alpha Transitions, which let you easily build your own animated wipes in an app like Motion or AE -- so they can be as high-touch as you can make them.

I wrote a series of posts outlining how to create alpha transitions for FCP [link] -- perhaps you'll find these useful.

Hi Walter,

Thanks for your reply.

Your link and subsequent posts look interesting. I'll have to have a play. I've done an AE intermediate course, but this just makes me realise how much I don't know!

AE can do just about anything, so my advice is to look around and see what kind of transitions you like and then ask specific questions about how those particular transitions are done.

Ha. That one is great. I like the seemingly 3D blocks of footage. Must have taken ages to make tho!
