I have a still photo and I need to create an effect over it that looks like a paint brush is revealing it. So blank white screen then paintbrush over reveals original image.

I've been trying to mess with the stroke effect and pen tools but I don't have a lot of practice when it comes to masking. Can anyone lend some assistants or recommend a tutorial? I'm running AE CS5 on a mac with snow leopard

use the paint tool.
in the paint menu, under duration, select "write on"
2 keyframes will be created for the start and end of your stroke.

The pain tool is pressure sensitive, and works really nice.. give it a whirl.

Awesome just got it working. I painted over different sections then just switched the % of the start and end so it goes in reverse.

Thanks alot

One more question? I thought the client just wanted a couple of paint strokes to reveal the painting in the background. It turns out they want a sped up time line of the painting being painted. So blank white screen and then fast past drawing of the art work.

I achieve this with a detail "write on" but wanted to know if there was a plugin that did this sort of thing? I feel like there would be but I don't know of any
