AE cannot open projects saved from newer versions.

New in AE CS5.5, however, is the ability to save down to an AE CS5 file.

Ask whoever sent you the file to open it themselves, then do File > Save as > Save a Copy as CS5. Of course, you won't be able to use any effects that are new in CS5.5 (like the Warp Stabilizer or improved camera DoF features).

is there anything that can be done in CS5 or CS6 or above to enable the file to be opened in CS4 ? some kind of saving settings ?

I'm having the same problem. also specifying version 10.
I have either CS5.5 or CS6.6 (not sure, I can check) at the office and CS4 at home and want to open it at home.

Sadly not. CS6 can save down to CS5.5, and CS5.5 can save down to CS5, but that's it.

You might try pt_OpenSesame for interchanging between CS6 and CS4.
