Hi Cow People,

I have a sequence in Final Cut (fcp7, kona LHi) that has been edited at 23.98 (aka 23.976). I now have to bring it into after effects and do color correction and some graphics and effects. I will need to bring this back into final cut, and ultimately output this to our HDCamSR deck at 1080 29.97, as well as to 720 59.94
I will also have to deliver FILES (quicktimes) on a drive of both flavors 1080 29.97 and 720 59.94

whats the ideal workflow? should i keep everything in AE in 23.98 and bring it into FCP at 23.98 and use KONA on output to frame rate convert to 29.97 and 59.94? will kona LHi do that? or do i need to convert this to 29.97 in AE or FCP beforehand?

as always ANY info is greatly appreciated.
thanks
B

Use the Kona card. You should be able to do both 1080 & 720 directly from FCP with it.

Do color correction in AE in a 23.976 comp. But you know that already, probably. Check out Color Finesse in AE for color correction if you haven't already.

Oops! I didn't see that you also have to make FILES. Sorry.

Well, the Kona card will still work for tape if you want to make a 23.976 1080 version of the file.

To make the files for delivery:
  • Nest the 23.976 comp inside a 1920x1080, 29.97 comp.
  • Then nest the same 23.976 comp in a 1280x720, 59.94 comp. Use the "scale the layer to fit the comp size" command, Cmd-Opt-f (Mac).
  • Add both to the Render Queue.
  • The 1280x720 comp needs no further tweaking.
  • To make a 1080 59.94i file, set the 1080 comp's render settings to upper field first. Then check mark "add pulldown", and select any of the five pulldown patterns.
  • Render in the codec of your choice.

The Kona card will work for all the conversions, if Bernardo doesn't mind re-digitizing his 1080i29.97 output, then re-digitizing again at 720p59.94 for cross-conversion.

Okay, that'll work, too. It still sounds tidier to make the files in AE; you can do a lot of rendering overnight.

Indeed -- just tossing out another option.

Kona's scalers are really nice, and it's real time. Going from 1080p down to 720p, this will matter less, but if Bernardo were going up from 720p to 1080p, he'd get better results on the Kona.

thanks to you both. i kinda had all this figured out in my head, but wanted to get second opinions from proffessionals like yourselves. I think i will shoot for straight file delivery out of after effects, but if its proving too complicated, i will redigitize.

thanks again guys.
