Hello Everyone,

I had a designer give me a truck created in illustrator. The wheels were made 3-d in illustrator and angled. I need to make the wheels spin in ae (using a z rotation) as if truck is skidding out. The problem is that even with the anchor point in the middle of the shape, the wheels does not rotate correctly. I've tried pre-comping the wheels, and then rotating them, but am having the same problem. Had anyone ever experienced this and found a work around?

Thanks!

H

Illustrator doesn't do live 3D; any 3D perspective effects are correct only for the given object's current position and camera view. Rotating a 3D effect from AI in AE's 3D space is like simply rotating any other 2.5D layer. It will not correctly re-render perspective within that layer.

If you can post a screen shot of the tire, we might be able to give alternate suggestions on how to handle this shot.

Thanks Walter, that's what I thought...I was thinking that we might need to rebuild the file in ae.I was thinking we might try using cc cylinder...though that may cause the same problems.

Here is what the image looks like:

I'd extrude a circle shape layer with Mettle ShapeShifter AE [link]. It will respond to the AE camera, and animating SSAE's "Rotation Y" parameter will give you the look you're going for.

What forum would you suggest?

You need to re-create the wheel in AI straight on and not turned (or ask the person who did the artwork to give you that. Animate rotation in AE and then make 3d and turn on Y axis to match perspective, then position over the turned wheel.

When you re-import the layer, select Composition - Retain Layer Sizes. This ensures that the Anchor Point for you wheels are centered within each wheel.

Thanks Roland...unfortunately, because of the perspective...they look weird when they turn from the center on the z axis....I think that I am going to have to rebuild. Really appreciate your help!

Yup Heather, I was referring to when the wheels get re-done.
