Hey there. I shot this footage

http://www.vimeo.com/29178490 on a bolex on 16mm. I forgot to engage the pressure plate the presses the film against the gate and got the effect you see at the 0:58 mark. Essentially the highlights are smearing all over the place.

I now have some footage shot on the Canon 1D that I want to try and get this effect from. It's for a music video - hence I'm doing it myself on AE.

Any idea how I might get something similar? I'll have to keyframe the effect for the variance but I haven't come up with a combo of filters/layers that gets close.

Thanks!

Michael

32 bit comp
Duplicate layer of footage
On top layer Luma Key the Darker parts of the image.
Apply Directional Blur vertically
Apply Glow (play with Radius and treshold)
Set Top layer to Screen and play with transparency.
Keyframe filters to create randomness.

Ah ha! It gives me a great place to start. Also modifying the vertical scale helps a bit too. Thanks a lot!

[Tudor "Ted" Jelescu] "Keyframe filters to create randomness."

The wiggle() expression could also be useful here.
