Animating a precomp

Hi, I'm creating an animated short film for a digital media class and am currently stumped. I've searched the net and have not found a solution. Please forgive any glaring stupidities on my part!

I have bodies in psd bits where I've linked children to parents and moved the anchor points. When I then move this composition into a new composition (for a scene), the layers have joined as one layer, an automatic precomp. I've tried making new precomps, but the layers are still condensed as one.

Scenes require characters to interact, so animating individually prior to placing them into a scene isn't a viable option.

If I am unable to retain the layers of a precomp when I drag it onto a new comp, what method should I be using?

You need to copy and paste all the individual layers from one comp into the other, rather than using your first comp as a precomp inside the second.

Like Walter said, copy all layers and paste them in the new comp. For workflow and ease of animation you can create adjustment layers and build controls for all the animation features on them and then use the shy switch to hide all the other layers.

Here are some great resources for character animation in AE;

Thanks so much guys! I will check out the links today. So far I've been copying and pasting the layers. It's a shame there isn't a group option to keep the workspace cleaner.

[Samantha Hill] "It's a shame there isn't a group option to keep the workspace cleaner."

You might want to file a feature request [link].

You can use layers' color labels [link] to make grouped selections, but they won't be collapsible like I think you're imagining.

Your best bet there is to use the shy switch [link] as Ted suggested to show and hide layers.
