Generating grids

I'd like to generate a grid inside of a custom shape. I tried creating a new solid, asking it and then generating a grid, but the grid applies on to the entire solid. I also tried making a shape layer and then generating a grid inside of it, but no luck. Is there a way I can go about doing this?

Thanks in advance.

Something like 0:30 of this video.

Have you tried to distort the grid using Mesh Warp over the grid layer?

I just tried the using the eraser tool, takes a lot of time... but hey, atleast it works. If you do know another workaround, I'd be grateful

Brian's suggestion WORKS! You've quite obviously have it all backasswards. In fact, the FreeFormAE plugin that is bundled with AE should also do the trick f you require 3D deformations of your grid.

If the grid is offending your vision, after applying the Mesh Warp then you should temporarily switch off the Grid effect as you manipulate the appropriate points to their destination.

[Alfred Hammer] "I'd like to generate a grid inside of a custom shape. I tried creating a new solid, asking it and then generating a grid, but the grid applies on to the entire solid."

From Render order and collapsing transformations [link]:
Note: Some effects ignore masks on the layer to which they’re applied. To have such an effect operate on a masked layer, pre-compose the layer with the mask applied, and then apply the effect to the pre-composed layer. (See About precomposing and nesting [link].)

Can we just forget about mask shapes for this one? It isn't required at all.

All you need to do is to create a solid at the size that you want. Then apply the Grid effect followed by FreeFormAE or Meshwarp and distort accordingly.

Just as Roland suggested this is best unless you have access to 3D software.

The grid effect needs to be applied to the solid within the precomp, not to the precomp itself.

The precomp (which will be a rectangular grid) should then be masked to whatever shape you like.
