I was trying to generate rolling clouds using Fractal noise, which turned out pretty well imo, as you can see here:

I'm using some reference material like this (first 3-8 seconds):

Obviously that is a stock-footage or something, but i want to generate it out of nothing.

My setup is basically something like this

two Solid layers in a comp.
Bottom has fractal noise (animated)
Top has a random-shaped mask with transfer mode to Classic Color Burn.

This cloud is put into the main composition were the transfer mode is set to Screen.

And that's it (times 20).

Now i want to highlight the top of the clouds and give the bottom some sort of shadow.
Playing around with color correction doesn't get it done nicely since it covers the whole cloud.

Adding a light and play around with CC Glass for a nice bumpmap doesn't do the trick either.

What do you people say about this? Do you guys have some tips to give this a more realistic view or have some other techniques to give this a more 3D look.

Thank you in advance!

I have used Particular to create volumetric clouds, but not rolling clouds. I think though that it may be worth exploring the possibility.
