High resolution Animation - Image buffer Error
on Sep 18, 2011 at 8:23:01 pm

Hi!

I'm working on a animation project with a resolution of 6827x7924.

This animation is going to be used on 16 Full HD Screens playing simultaneously. The physical distance between the 16 screens was considered in the resolution.

My job is to render this project and then cut it up for the 16 HD Screens.

When trying to render in full resolution I'm getting this error message: "After Effects error. Image buffer of size 30000x30000 @ 8bpc (3,4 GB) exceed internal limits. Decrease memory requirements for the rendering of this frame."

Now I'm working on a sixcore system with 24 GB of RAM. When rendering in half resolution my machine takes about 8 Minutes. But as soon as I try rendering at full Res, i get this error message.

Does this mean 24 GB Ram is not enough for rendering this particular project and will i'll be able to if upgrading to 48 GB ?

Sorry for my english (i'm german speaking) and thanks in advance!

No.

This message is telling you that the amount of RAM required for a single image buffer is 3.4GB, which is larger than the 2GB limit.

Something in your composition is causing After Effects to need to process a single image that is 30,000x30,000 pixels. If your images are only ~7,000x8,000, the extra large size of buffer needed could be caused by certain effects, large input images, or combinations of 3D elements.

It's hard to give specific advice without knowing a lot more about your project. In general, my advice is to isolate what is requiring so much memory and then reduce its requirements.

Hello and thank you for your input,

The project contains actually only one PSD File which was imported as editable composition.
None of the Layers exceed 30,000x30,000 pixels.

I'll try now shutting off all effects and see if it works.

I have no problems at all rendering in half the resolution. When rendering in half resolution AE is using 75% of RAM. (Multiprocessing on)

OK - shutting off effects hasn't helped either. :-(

What effects are you using? Things like blurs, glows, and drop shadows can increase the size of a layer.

Hi!

Effects used in this project: corner pin, bezier warp and stroke.

The project was made on a Mac - I'm using Windows.
When rendering on a Mac Pro with about the same specs as my PC there were no problems.
I tried rendering on two other PCs and one of them gets the same error too.

I realy need this project to render on my PC.

I'm really confused.

CHECK OUT MY WORKAROUND:

It was the same here for me with three 21000 px files from the Nasa. But i was able to render them in half resolution, not full.

i need a 1920x1080 result:

In the render settings dialogue i changed the resolution to half size.
in the output module i resized it to 200%.
what hapens is, that a 960x540 version will be pushed to 1920x1080.
so there is a 50% quality loss, which ends in a blurry result.

so i avoid this reduction through setting my render comp to the double size of 1920x1080 to 3840x2160 as the first step of all.
Then, the 50% quality loss is there, but not visible :)

conclusion:
double Your final comp size - and render it at half resolution.
