Hi guys,

I'm animating some weather icons. So far so good, but now I'am struggeling with rain.

I want to get this look:

So i started with Particular. I got drops falling down with gravity... but how to make those 'tail' strokes? So the drop falls and leaves a trail behind it, wich fades.

thnx

Two options:
Motion blur
Aux system

In your case, I think the aux system would be your best bet. Read the documentation for Particular for an explanation for how to use it.

Another (older-school) option is to use an adjustment layer over your particular and apply the Echo filter, Normal mode, with a fade value of around 90%

lowering the shutter speed of the motion blur can also give the rain drops more of a tail.

I went for the Aux option. Works like a charm, only there is no (good looking) size over life option. Wich means the stroke doesnt dissapear as nice.

I worked arround that with making the particular layer a precomp and working with a feather mask.

Thanks for the tips!

You can draw your own size over life graph just click and drag on the graph area. Don't forget to click on the smooth button a couple of times after you draw it.
