After Effects Laser as light source

Say I have an object in a scene that's intentionally been made too dark to see, then I have a couple lasers be emitted by a few sources.
The lasers are created by just gaussian blurs and some color.
Any way to have the lasers light the object, without manually lighting the object?
I could apply a levels adjustment to the object, and keyframe when needed, but I was hoping there was a better approach.

Two approaches pop into mind...

1- Creating duplicates of the objects as they would appear lit by the lasers, and keying the transparency from 0-100 at the right time.
2- Using some AE 3d lights to reveal the objects

Keyframming is unavoidable unless using a time driven expression as far as I can tell.

You could use FreeForm Pro to displace the object in 3d. Then you can use AE lights (linked with the lasers) to light that object.
