Having text come from "behind" an object. A question about masks.

I'm sure this is a simple questions. I have a very basic 3D scene. In the middle I have a very thin vertical layer (made by masking a solid). I want to have text appear as if its coming out of this layer. I have a lot of text, and plan on updating this project weekly changing the text layers. So the vertical line that all of the text will be coming "from behind" will be static.

The only way I can figure this out (in 3D space), is to animate a layer mask as I'm animating the position. This works ok, but is a huge pain for lots of text elements that will be changing in length frequently.

Is there a better way to do this? Sorry for the noob questions.

You may want to upload one or more images to help us visualize what it is that you want to do and what it is that you are starting out with.

Position your text box in a 3d layer (assuming you want it to be 3d) to get the correct perspective for the moving text.

Precomp the text layer, then apply your mask to the precomp.

Any changes to the text, you make to the original text layer, by opening up the precomp, and then you will not have to reapply all the masks and positioning every time.
