Strange DPX issue in AE CS5.5
on Jul 29, 2011 at 10:04:58 am

Hi everybody,

I'm currently testing CS5.5, trial downloaded directly from Adobe, on a Macbook Pro 6.1 running 10.6.8.
Here's the thing: On trying to import DPX sequences (1280x720p25, 10bit lin), AE does... nothing. No error message, no crash, and definitely no clip appearing in the project window. QTs etc import normally.
The same DPX sequences import just fine in CS5 on another computer, same hardware, 10.6.7. Opening that project file in CS5.5 loads the clips, but shows all the media to be offline.
Since my purpose behind running the trial is essentially a performance comparison, I'd really like to get this to run. Any ideas on what might be the issue here?

Thanks in advance,

Max

Are the DPX files stored locally on your computer, or are you trying to access them over a network? Might there be a permissions issue?

The DPX files are locally stored, eSATA drive attached via Sonnet card. They open just fine in Frame Cycler on the same machine.

[Max Link] "They open just fine in Frame Cycler on the same machine."

Puzzling. Can you import a single DPX into AE, or does that silently fail as well?

Same issue with single DPXes. AE imports any file type I've tried so far, save DPX. QTs in different codecs, TIFFs, JPEGs, ... - All fine.

I'm beginning to think I might just have downloaded a partially corrupt installer package. Two reinstalls have not fixed the problem, but like I said, this is the trial version downloaded directly from Adobe.

Can you post a single DPX? I'll try to import it on CS5.5 here.

This is one of the sequences' slate frame. Opens fine in just about anything but AE - even Photoshop CS5.1 works fine with it!

I'm see the exact same behavior -- importing this file fails silently on AE CS5.5 on a Mac. I can open in PS CS5.1, as well as AE CS3 and AE CS5.

I highly recommend that you submit a bug report [link]. If you like, feel free to mention this thread in your report. An engineer may wish to see one of these DPX files, too.

Thanks Walter, I've submitted a report. Let's see what they can dig up...

For the time being, I'll just stick with CS5. ;)

Best,

Max

I'll take a look at this, probably on Monday, but maybe over the weekend. When you submit the bug report, include a link to one of the problematic files.

Is it an 8-bit dpx? Haven't tried in 5.5 but in previous versions AE didn't support 8-bit dpx. Only 10-bit.

Max,

I tried to respond to the bug report that you filed, but the email address that you gave doesn't seem to work.

I can open the file fine in Photoshop CS5.1 and Premiere Pro CS5.5, and in After Effects CS5 and CS4. Just not in After Effects CS5.5. That's interesting.

Please tell me as much as you can about where the file came from. (Thanks for including some of the specs in the test file image.)

Hi Todd, thanks for looking into this.

I don't know why you can't get email me, maybe try max@hs-unit.de instead.

The DPXes originate from the capture software of a Weisscam HS-1. I don't know what info might be relevant - anything pertinent to the files' properties should be in the header, right?

Best,

Max

I've added a link to this forum thread to the bug record in our database, so the engineer working on this will come to this thread for more details if needed.

Are the dpx's from Nuke...
I had the same problem and it was caused by having "fill" checked on my write node. Uncheck the box and you should be dandy

Did this ever get sorted out?
I can't open DPX files from a Sony F3 camera or from Lowry digital (they really know what they are doing).
The files will open on every other program I can find, just not AE CS 5.5...
Cheers Richard.
