I am trying to create a 3D animation on a road map. I have after effects zooming into a map and rotating, with a red line that animates where I've been. I want a dot that pops up where the trip starts and one at the end. I created a dot at the beginning, but when the map moves on the screen, the dot does too. The dot should be stationary at the starting point. How do you do this?

Make a solid & put a circle mask on it for your dot, then position it on the map. Done.

If you're saying that the dot doesn't stick with the map where it's supposed to when the map moves, parent the dot to the map.

If the map and the dot are both static, but you're animating the camera, it's possible the dot is not properly aligned in 3D space. It may look right from the perspective of the initial camera position, but not from other perspectives, so it seems to move when the camera does.

To fix this, position the dot correctly using other 3D views [link]. Switch your Comp Viewer from "1 View" to "4 Views" and reposition the dot correctly using the orthographic views.

Thanks - I got it to work by making a mask on the map, then modifying its mask expansion, changing its pixels at points from negative to positive. That made it pop up when I wanted it to. Thanks for all your tips!!!
