I've already had a look on the boards/google to see if I can find a straight forward answer to this, so please excuse me if I've missed something already posted on the topic and please point me in the right direction.

My issue is, I had a group of 3D layers, all with lovely shadows casting over my 'floor'. I then pre-comped them and turned on collapse transformations. Now all my shadows are missing. I have checked cast shadows to on for the new pre-comp and inside the pre-comp all layers have cast shadows turned on. Why are my shadows now not appearing?

Are there any 2D layers interspersed among your 3D layers? 2D layers prevent 3D layer intersection and shadow casting.

Are all the lights in your nested comp? If so, they will be ignored and should be moved back into your main comp.

3D layer interactions, render order, and collapsed transformations [link]

Thanks guys!

Solved...2D layer was affecting render order.

I'm running in the same situation, but with no 2D layers. My render order, top to bottom, is Spot light; camera; 3D layer; 3D layer; 3D pre-comp with collapsed tranformations. All layers within the pre-comp are also 3D. I tried disabling OpenGL - no luck. I tried creating a new layer using the alpha information of the pre-comp to cast a shadow in it's place - no luck.

What am I missing?

Have the same problem. It seems that a 3D layer with collapsed transformation does not support shadow casting. Shame, would save a lot of layers in the main comp.

Yes, this really is too bad. I wonder what's in the coding that prevents this from being possible?
