I just came across this performance optimization article from Adobe:

In it, they suggest using 2 media drives--one for source files, and one for render files. I've always just pointed everything to my single external RAID like I do for my FCP source and render files. Does anyone use a separate drive for render files?

Hey, if you've got a RAID, don't sweat it: just keep working as you do now. There really isn't any big speed or efficiency improvement to be had for you.

I think that thread has more to do with people who don't have RAIDs.

Actually, RAID only addresses the speed of the spinning disks---not the capacity of the bus.

Yes, if you're working with lots of big files, it's best to have reads from source media and writes to export files going to separate drive controllers.

It's not a disaster if you can't set this up, but it is a way to get some extra performance for heavy-duty work.
