Considering building a new After Effects beast for 5.5.

Anyone with real experience with a dual Xeon versus an i7 system?

I am planning an SSD for system drive, another SSD media scratch disk, and striped array for storage.

12 GB ram (estimated).

Quadro 580 or better GPU.

Intel Xeon E3-1230 Sandy Bridge 3.2GHz

thanks for advice and observations/input.

I'd go with the xeon's even if it meant sacrificing an ssd. The i7's are getting better, but the xeon's are still faster, and CPU speed is still the biggest performance determiner for ae.

I agree with Kevin- working on both i7 and Xeon I would choose the Xeon.

Thanks for the advice, now I am wondering, after doing a little research about the new multicore AMDs, about dual Xeon vs dual AMD (opterons). They have 6 and 12 core processors.

I just don't know anyone locally with a dual AMD machine doing VFX work.
