Hi Guys,

I would want my 'AE CS4' to utilize all the 6 cores of a new single XEON X5660 along with 16GB RAM (2Gb per core + 4GB for other apps) that i'm planning to buy in a day or two.

I want to know if it's possible to configure AE CS4 in such a manner, if not then what's the max config that can be utilized. Also pls recommend the right operating system for the optimum use.

From what I remember and checking out these to forum post on the same topic.

AE CS4 was 64bit ready so it can use 4GB+ ram but the way you want to customize it is something that you can only do on CS5+.

As for OS only windows AE CS4 is 64bit compatible I believe. There is a slider that you can use to make it use more ram for rendering or previewing.

Check out these to links for more info on performance. Although sometimes the way they suggest to increase performance doesn't always work in practice with you system.

Hope that helps - Blog - Portfolio

AE CS4 was 32-bit. It was not 64-bit. That's why all plugins have to be updated to 64-bit versions when people upgraded to CS5.
CS4 cannot use more than 4 GB of RAM. If you want to make the most of your system, you will need to upgrade. I love CS5 and reportedly CS5.5 has even better memory management.

See these pages:

The gist is that you can use more than 4GB on a 64-bit operating system, but After Effects CS4 wasn't very effective and efficient at doing so because each instance of the application could only use 4GB.

After Effects CS5 and later are much, much better in this regard.
