Roto Brush OK in preview, messed up on export??
on Jun 22, 2011 at 4:31:28 pm

I'm going to preface this by saying that I am fairly clueless when it comes to After Effects, so please be gentle. I took on this project for fun, warning those involved "I've never done this before... but I know the concept!" and now I feel I MUST sort it out because it's so close to being good.

I shot the messiest scene ever to try to layer, with the idea that I could take it into AE and roto brush it into submission. I exported early on to see how it was going, and it was still a mess - legs missing, bits of background just popping up - then I finished the roto job. Many hours later, that's actually gone pretty well. I won't EVER do it this way again, but the project was looking good. I watch through within the program, and it all looks great. But then I rendered out to an .mp4 file, and it's a disaster! Here's what I'm talking about:

When this happens in FCP, I assume it's referencing old files and I know which ones to trash. For the life of me, I don't know how to do that with AE.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Perhaps you haven't frozen your Rotobrush area?
AE can't really be picked up by poking around and the Roto Brush is CERTAINLY not intuitive.

Here are some resources on the Roto Brush: http://blogs.adobe.com/toddkopriva/2010/04/roto-brush-in-after-effects-cs.h...

If you need to rotoscope without using the rotobrush here are some good tips: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/aftereffects/cs/using/WS39e706a46ad531be1172e08...

Here are some great resources for learning AE: http://blogs.adobe.com/toddkopriva/2010/01/getting-started-with-after-eff.h...

It figures that I'd be messing around where I shouldn't be! :)

Thank you, Great Szalam! It looks like freezing the roto brush was the key. I'm amazed that's the only major issue I ran into.

Thanks for the links as well. Time to sit my impatient self down and get educated!

Thanks Walter. I had a busy couple of weeks with a lot of travel. It's nice to be back home.

Just wanted to share the final product, in case you were interested! It's certainly not perfect, but I'm pretty happy with it as a trial run of roto brush, not to mention a wildly ambitious shoot.

Thanks again for your help!
