Greetings,
What is the best 3D model format for use in After Effects? I found a free '3Ds' model and that seems to work ok. Is that the usual format or is there something better? Any I should avoid?

Any recommendations on a site for purchasing 3D models to use in a project?

Also, are there any detailed tutorials on working with 3D models in After Effects? I've googled but not much out there.

Thanks

AE does not import 3d models directly- you can do it using a PSD 3d layer of a plugin like Zaxwerks Invigorator. Depending on what you use you can check out the specs on their respective websites.
I have used 3DS models successfully with Zaxwerks Invigorator Pro.

Thanks for the response! I was able to import the 3DS file into photoshop and than bring it into After Effects.

When animating a camera move, I am noticing that preview times are very slow even with image quality taken to 'quarter' percent. Is this normal when working with 3D models in After Effects?

My experience with PSD 3D layers was that AE is slow. Slower than with Zaxwerks- that is why I chose Invigorator for 3D in AE.

Like Tudor says, AE doesn't support it directly. As far as I know Photoshop only takes OBJ files, Wavefront Oject I think that is.

Not sure how textures are imported, but you can paint the model in 3d in PSD, save it and import the PSD in AE. On importing just remember to have live 3d selected, but I think that's on by default!

That's not correct. See this page for the list of supported formats.
