Hi all,

I'm fairly new to AE (CS 5). I wonder if this workflow is correct and should work:

1. I've created several 3D text layers. Very basic, just text.
2. I've added keyframes for my camera to move along the different text
3. I've timed it to music, to make a nice complete animation.
4. Now I want to make it look nice. I click on the text, then hit "pre-compose". Now I can add various effects to the texts, like smoke or whatever.

However in step 4, after I've precomposed, the 3D position of the text is not remembered. I need to place the new comp at at the proper place again in 3D space :(

One way to do this is to create a camera in your text precomp (the exact focal length) and link it with the camera in the main comp with expressions.

For future reference, it's a good idea to create the precomp with the text first before you move it into position.

For now, one way to do it would be to duplicate your text, precomp one of the text layers. Parent the precomp to the text layer that's still there and then change all the attributes on the precomp to 0. That way it ends up in the exact same position.
Or, if your text isn't too complicated, just create text precomps for all your text and then parent them to the text layers that are currently there. And change all the attributes to 0.
In either ease, you would then remove the parenting and delete the text layers.
