Newbie After Effects Question
on May 13, 2011 at 7:01:26 pm

Searched everywhere, but couldn't find this:

I have a trial version of AE 5.5

I know that plugins wont work, but what about effects?

To get started, I downloaded a template and it is asking for the "cc burn" effect. I can't seem to find anyway to apply that effect. I thought that was something AE came with. Is there some specific way to apply an effect? NOTE: the dropdown list is grayed out. I think that's may be because it's a trial, but if there's any other reason....

The trial version does not have the CC plugin effects which are standard on the retail version.

It's important to know some terminology. From After Effects Help:

"Plug-ins are small software modules—with filename extensions such as .aex, .pbk, .pbg, and .8bi—that add functionality to an application. After Effects effects are implemented as plug-ins, as are some features for importing and working with certain file formats."

In other words, effects _are_ plug-ins. All of them.

Now, with that terminology clarification out of the way, see this page for details of what's in the trial version.

And start here to learn After Effects.

Excellent! Thank you for the clarification. I'm amazed at how powerful a tool AE is and can see that it will be worth getting a familiar with it. Also thanks for the links!
