I've created a simple composition that uses a 3d solid layer and a point light to create a soft vignette appearance. Everything looks okay when exported to lossless QuickTime, but when I sent it to the video guy he said that after compressing there was bad banding, and I had to remove the light completely (everything looks flat and boring now.)

Is there a trick in AfterEffects to create soft lighting with minimal compression banding?

Work in 16 or 32 bit and render a sequence of files tga @ 32bit or uncompressed tiff.
Sometimes it helps to add grain.

Search the AE forum for "banding" and you'll find tons of threads with tips ... most of which center around upping the color resolution, adding grain and/or adjusting individual color channels.
