Grey blank C4D view port on start up
on May 9, 2019 at 2:00:26 pm

Hi, every time I fire up C4D R19 the viewport is always like this:

Tried turning off OpenGL, it did help but I do want to keep that on for work.

What I usually do is to switch to any default layout like "Animate," and then turn back to the ones I saved myself, which is quite annoying doing it on a daily basis.

Does anyone have any solution? Appreciate your help.

It looks like your Filter settings are set to "None." Click on "Filter" in the View menu and select "All," and that will bring back all of the options. You can then deselect the ones you want to disable.

After that, save the scene as new.c4d in Applications > Maxon > Cinema 4D R19 and it will save all of the settings. Here's a tutorial which discusses this:

Thank you for your reply.

It seems that it isn't the problem since I did turn all the settings in "filter."

Well, I thought I would give it a shot. Could you save and upload a project file?

I thought that I might be able to find an errant setting, but here is what I get when I open that file. Are you still seeing a blank grey background?

Thank you for your reply.

Yes. it goes something like this:

1) [saved user 1 layout as startup layout ]
startup = blank viewport >
switch to "Animate" = working viewport >
switch back to "user 1 layout" = working viewport

2) [Animate as startup layout]
startup = blank viewport >
switch to any other layout = working viewport

it seems that the no matter what the first layout is, the booting up viewport is got to be blank...

I'm sorry, but I don't have any other suggestions. Just out of curiosity, I uploaded a sample project below which looks like this on my system:

What do you see when you open it?

it looks like this:
(at my booting up layout)

switch to 2nd layout:

No worries, I appreciate your help :)

Once you got a "working viewport" did you try saving a new.c4d file as I suggested earlier?

Sorry.. I havn't at the time.
But I just tried and it does not work..
It did work for the first time but suddenly it didn't when I try to re-confirm if it is the fix.

I just remembered something else.

There is an option to save a template file which when executed saves a file that is used when you first start C4D.  After that it will use your new.c4d file.

To remove this file, open C4D preferences (Edit > Preferences), hit the button at the bottom to open the preferences folder.  In the prefs folder you should find a file called template.c4d. Delete this. Then close and reopen C4D. It should now use your new.c4d on every file, including the first one.

If that doesn't do it, or that template file doesn't exist, I give up.

If it wasn't clear, look in the "prefs" folder within the hierarchy that appears when you click on that button.

I am afraid that I see no template.c4d:

However, I think I have some idea...
In fact, I have a dual monitor set-up + two 1080Ti,
and as far as I know, the OpenGL setting in C4D preference shows only 1 of my GPU,

what I have just found that if the c4d comes on my 1st monitor (GPU 1) after booting up, the viewport is fine.
but when it boots up on my 2st monitor (GPU 2), it greyed out, and I grad my C4D window to my 1st monitor, the viewport will then be normal again, no matter where I drag it to.

Do you think it is the fix..? or am I understanding it wrong.

I only use one monitor so I won't be of any help with that question. If you've found a workaround then go with that.

Indeed... I think I am going to stick with it for now.

For those who encounter the same problem with me, what I do is to:
1. make sure the c4d window is on whatever monitor it shows the functioning viewport
2. save it as start-up layout (then it suppose to boot up on that monitor as well)

Also a big thank you to Jim ☺ have a good one!

I'm glad you found a solution. And thanks for outlining what worked for you.
