Hey fellow cows,

I need some help,

My task is very simple, but I don't know how to go about it.

See this reference picture of slate stone:

I am trying to recreate this stone texture on an object I made, I want to apply the texture only on the top surfaces.

This is a render of the object: (modelled in fusion360)

I want to point out that I am trying to create a 3D geometry, Using a displacement channel in the material editor is not an option for me. I tried to use a displacement deformer but the results are awful.

Does anyone have some tips or suggestions?
any input is appreciated!

THAT amount of detail indeed requires displacement, a little bit less can be achieved with a normal map. Both still require some tweaks in the glossiness of your material.

The displacement deformer should act just like the material channel, giving that it has enough geometry to work with and similar parameters. (in this case, huge amounts)

But yes, I'd go for the channel instead of the modifier. Why is it not an option, if I may ask?

Okay, thank you for the info, I appreciate it.
I have been trying the disp[lacer, but I found the result look quite bad.
Maybe I have to try to subdivide the polygons more evenly or I'm thinking of using subdivision surface and then weigh the sharp edges to keep the same shape.

The reason a colour channel is not an option is that I need to export the 3D model with the geometry in it for production.

You should import the model into zBrush and add that detail there with brushes. Only adding geometry where needed.
