.FBX or .3DS or .MAX animated models into C4D

Hi, I'm hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction as to how to fix an animated model (.FBX or .3DS or .MAX). When i open into C4D it imports but the "bones" are not connected to the model itself so when i play the animation the bones moves but not the model itself. Everything else seems to be working.

I'm getting back into 3D after 20+ years so things have changed and I have noticed that many formats don't play nicely with each other. I purchased the model by the designer who said it "should" work but he was unable to help me and i'm unable to get a refund so maybe there is a tutorial that can demonstrate how to link the bones to the model.

I plan on learning C4D over time but immediate need is to use the animated model in After Effects CC 2019. I'm not looking for alternate ways into AE but simply fixing the model that I purchased in C4D.

If someone can provide me a link to a tutorial I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you
