Cell Shading and Background Texture
on Jul 28, 2016 at 6:50:08 pm

Hi everyone!
This is the first time I write here and first of all I apologize for my english 'cause I'm Italian, but your forum is pretty much better than the italian ones so I write here :D
Well, what I'd like to ask for is about a way to apply a cel shader to texture.. I explain, I made a cartoon character with c4d and I apply the cell mode in the luminance of the materials so I have a nice sharp cartoonish stile. The problem is for an object that should have a texture with stars (it's a wizard's hat) and I can't find a way to apply this cell shading stile to this texture. I made a starry material with the wizard brush in bp so I could set the texture on the uv map, but I don't know what could be the next step..

Hope I have been clear enouth and someone can help me

Thanks in advance
ciao!

Hello and welcome to CreativeCow,

The first thing that comes to mind for your problem would be to use an 'Art' Shader. you can import your texture the way you would another, but it would stay flat like in a cartoon.

That's all I can think of now, but if I come across anything else I'll let you know!

Ciao :)

thanks for your answer!
I made a material with only luminance and it's flat.. But do you (or anyone) know any way to apply a sort of sharp shadow like the cel shading does?
I tought maybe something to put on the textured material with a multiplay mode, alpha.. just shooting some abstract ideas coming from my graphic designer background.. I'm not confidence with c4d and really don't know if what I'm saying has any sense :D

Thanks again

If you have Sketch & Toon (depends which Cinema version you have) you may be able to use the Sketch effect in render settings to get what you want.

Hi,

if you use the Art brush, in a layer with the Cel shader on top, colours set to black - grey - white, then change it's mode to Multiply, that should give the effect you're looking for.

Like that.

Let me know if that clears anything up.
