 | Proper workflow for projects with small variations

What is the "correct" workflow for making small animation changes to a project.
For example, I often have a product, like highly detailed headphones, where I'll animate multiple 'scenes', but I obviously need to be able to go back and make any changes to that specific animation or camera angle at a later point.
Is the best workflow to save each different scene as it's own project file (files are quite large), or maybe to drop all the contents of a shot into a Null called Shot01, and then duplicate and work on the next scene within the same project? Maybe use Xrefs or Layer browser?

I don't think there's any right way -- just whatever works for you. I tend to avoid Xrefs because they add complications. I use the layer browser a lot with complex scenes.
