Extrusion with Shader effector?

I am trying to make a logo half flat (2d object) to extruded (3d) at a gradual rate, similar to the image below. I tried to use a shader with a gradient to get this effect, but I couldn't get it. IS this the best way to go about it or is there another method someone would recommend?

going to be hard to get the exact same look as a vector fake but if you had Lofts rather than extrudes you could loft from one copy of a spline to another then just lift one side up a bit with a soft selection (etc more than one way to do that) - you would still have to use gradients in the textures but that's easy enough
