XREFS corrupt upon reopening scene

I'm working on a scene with a couple of other artists. One is dressing the scene while I tweak and texture individual models. We're using Xrefs (coming from the world of referencing in Maya).
We just finished our first complex set, but upon reopening it, all the Xrefs have gone crazy. While the Xref locators themselves are still in the correct position, all the individual components of the referenced files have been rescaled and relocated all over the place.
Any idea how I can get these to behave? It seems like referencing is such a basic element that any program should be able to handle it--is there another way to reference external files into a scene? (I looked and couldn't find one.)
