Polygon weirdness

Okay, I know this is a real newbie kind of thing but...

I created a bezier spline by tracing around an image in the background of the front viewport. Then, I extruded it in the z axis. Made it editable. Here's my problem, whenever I select a polygon, all the polygons get highlighted and then the connected polygons (whether in the caps, or the extruded nurb) all move with the selected polygon. The same thing happens when I select a point. The whole cap moves, or the extruded part.

I tried the "connect+delete" command and was able to get it to one object, but then if I selected a point and tried to move it, it would deform the whole object like it was bending it.

What gives?
