Modeling A Helmet, Half-sphere retains solidity

I'm modeling a helmet for first, Shapeways to test it, and second for molding. I don't have any of the more fancy software but whenever I export the model as a .wrl, .obj, or .stl, all I get is the half sphere I edited being a complete solid object rather than the hollow one in Cinema 4d.
I've attached some screenshots, any help would be great!
