Changing bone length on a full animated rig

I have an humanoid character rig, with a leg composed by 3 joints: 1 at the hip area, 1 on the knee and one on the foot.
This rig is fully animated by keyframes based on joint position and rotation.
What I want to do is make the leg longer so it will fit on a model I want to attach to it, I want to lenghten the thigh bone ( the bone created by the hip joint and the knee joint ), and in the process not damage all the animations.
the hip joint is the parent to the knee which is parent to the foot. each has it's own set of key frames.
