Stitching and Deformation

I want to have stitches (cloned geometry) pinch the fabric. I was thinking: use an ambient occlusion shader on the displacement channel. but I can't seem to get it to work. It only uses the color from the end of the spectrum of the ambient occlusion gradient. Any ideas?
