Converting material layer to smart object in photoshop

I'm new to the forum and I was hoping someone would be able to shed some light on a technical issue of have not been able to overcome.

I am hoping to create a 3D mockup file to be used in photoshop. Similar to the one featured in the image below

I would like to have the ability to create a file in photoshop using embedded 3D data that allows you to apply a graphic to a curved surface using editable smart objects

Please follow the link below to see an example of what I am trying to create

As you will hopefully be able to see the file comprises of several layers to make up the photoshop mockup and the top layers "your image here" give you the ability to apply a new image to the curved face of the letterhead.

I have been able to import 3d models into photshop and change the diffusion layer but I cannot for the life of me figure out how that material layer can be converted to a smart object.
