I have hunted around and not found a working answer for this, but I have a project I am trying to import into AE without a bg - only the objects in animation. I tried creating an .aec file with .png instead of .tiff and that did not work. Seems like this should be a simple thing...

You need to check the "save alpha" box in the Render>Save settings. As long as there's no background or sky object in your scene and you save to a compatible format (like .png or .tif) then AE should interpret the alpha channel.
