How could I achieve a stretching rubber effect?

Hi.

I'm looking for general advice on how I could achieve the following:

Imagine a flat plane with the properties of thin rubber filling the screen. Behind this rubber there is 3d text. As I move the text in to the rubber I would like to push at the surface to reveal the form of each letter. I don't want the text to actually come through the surface, rather just show the impression of it through the material.

I hope that makes some sort of sense and thank anyone who can point me in the right direction.

Thanks

Stuart

You have three options:

1. collision deformer;
2. cloth simulation;
3. soft body dynamics.

Of the three the collision deformer is probably the easiest to control.

Thanks Adam,

I gave the collision deformer option a try but I can't seem to get the plane to accurately form the shape of the letters being pushed into it. I just end up with nondescript lumps and bumps unfortunately. Maybe there is a setting/option I'm missing?

Thanks again for your help.

The plane has to have LOTS of polygons to deform smoothly.

Thank you, that worked perfectly!
