Syntheyes Matchmove Scale
on Jul 29, 2013 at 5:51:18 pm

I'm primarily an After Effects artist so my knowledge of C4D is very basic.

What I'm trying to do is take matchmove data generated in Syntheyes and apply it to a camera in an existing C4D project, render that out and composite it behind the original greenscreen footage.

The tracking all looks great in Syntheyes and matches well in AE but when I bring it in to C4D (via Lightwave scene) it's as if the scale of the camera movement is way too small. What am i missing?

Thanks.

I've never had a problem with Syntheyes LW export into Cinema. When you bring in the camera and then load the movie into a texture, and place the texture on a Background Object, it doesn't match up? Is that what you're saying? I don't know what you mean when you say you're applying it to a camera in an existing scene. The point of the LW import is to bring in the animated camera from Syntheyes. Then you can use the Syntheyes markers to establish the proper scale for your Cinema Scene/objects.

Sorry I'm probably not explaining things well because I'm so out of my element here. The situation is that I have a virtual set that's already been set up for me to composite the talent into. What I need to do is get the camera data into that C4D scene so I can render the background and do the comp. The problem is that when I do that (either via Lightwave scene, C4D python script, or AE) it's as if the camera and it's motion path are tiny compared to the rest of the scene.

Okay, I was confused because I always start out with the tracked scene and then set up the 3D scene to match. In your case it's going to take some extra work. First, when you import your LW scene you should get a dialogue asking what scale you would like to use. I think default is 10. You might try setting that to 1000, or even 10,000 instead, to get closer to the mark.

I would also create some objects in Syntheyes that you can use as landmarks inside of C4D. For example, you might create a small box and place it at the corner of a desk. Then what you might do is put your 3D models in a null that's centered at that box. That would give you a reasonably close point from which you could scale your 3D scene to try and match the BG footage.

That's really helpful. I actually ended up bringing all the geometry from the virtual set project into my matchmove project and scaled the world to fit. Works wonderfully now.

Thanks!

Another option may be to export your scene from C4D as an obj and bring it in to syntheyes. Then you can scale your scene in syntheyes to fit. If your scene in C4D is large you could just export out certain objects.

That's an interesting idea. I'll have to try that. Thanks.
