Alpha channel weird stuff

I've searched here and the general internet to figure out what the heck is going on here.
It's pretty straightforward, I've got a document with social media icons that i'm placing in a cinema scene. Background needs to be transparent.
I knock out the background in photoshop so it's transparent. I've even gone as far as creating a separate alpha channel. I create a plane in C4d the same size as my doc, create new material and import the picture into both the color channel and transparency channel, then apply the material to the plane
Everything seems hunky dory until i render it out and some of the stuff that should be transparent (shadows and part of the background) are white.
I've done psd and tga with alpha but no luck. It's driving me flipping crazy and I can't find a solution anywhere!

You should use the material's alpha channel instead of transparency. It's possible that you're getting a specular reflection on the transparent part.

Actually I take that back. the transparencies on the logo are fine, it's only the bottom "shadow" that are still white now. I guess I'll just chop them in photoshop. weird.

I added my own shadow in photoshop and it does it even then. Why does it automatically add white behind anything with transparency? Is there some weird button I'm not pushing in C4d?
