I actually fixed it... it turns out the polygons were inside out (the blue was outside when i selected it) it probably had to do with the fact that i bridged them wrong before subdividing... I'm a beginner so SORRY for wasting ur time. Just one question... whats the phong angle???
Phong Angle is a setting in the phong tag that's on most objects (for a description of the math behind Phong try the Help or Google it - it controls apparently smooth shading on objects that are really a bunch of flat faces) - the default setting is usually ok but it too can cause odd shadowing in the right situations.
