multiple substes with one mesh

Hello everyone,
I'm just beginning with C4D, and I'm trying to export in .X file, one mesh composed of 4 splines. I would like this mesh to have as many subsets as my number of splines (of course i use extrude nurbs to create the mesh). I have tried creating one material for each spline because this technique seems to work with cubes (even though I get one additional subset that doesn't correspond to any spline); but I can't do it with the extrude nurbs. I have also tried to create one extrude nurbs by spline but it doesn't seem to work either.
Does anyone know if it's even possible?
THX in advance!!
