Creating simple "inset" area in landscape

I'm still relatively new to C4D but I'm having a lot of trouble figuring out how to inset shapes into larger shapes. For example I have a simple bumpy landscape and I want to make a circular inset area to mimic a lake.

Here's an example of the type of simple lake inset that I'm trying to achieve:

As you can see the lake is inset into the planet. How is this done?
I have tried using boole. I know there might be a way to do it using extrude, but am having trouble figuring it out.

Thanks for your help,
Matt

Boole would definitely work, extrusion would work too but would require doing a boole or a knife cut first to get the shape to extrude so Boole is easier. Then just add another sphere with the water texture on it to get your water level or you have to make a more complex or you have to make a more complex boole to get the water to curve too.

Amazing! Thank You. The use of an inner shape for the lake bottom is a great solution.

Thanks again,
Matt
