How do I scale an object in one direction or axis

How do I scale an object in one direction or axis

Basically every time I try and scale an object on they Y Axis it goes Up and down......... I just want it to go up.... how do i manage this?

The object's axis is the origin of any scaling operation, so in order to change the origin you'll need to move the object's axis to the object's lowest point in Y. You can do that quite easily with the Axis Center tool (structure menu in R12 or below, Mesh menu in R13).

Unfortunately that isn't possible with primitive objects. For primitives, you can create a null at the desired origin position, make the primitive a child of the null, and scale with the Object Tool.
