I'm only starting out in 3d animation and I was wondering if anyone could break down (or at least know or suggest) how to achieve this type of animations

Mostly interested in the second link. Everything else from their instagram page is pretty neat too.

What softwares or plugins would I need to achieve these? What kind of tutorials should I look up online?

Hi Anna -

3DS Max could most definitely do any of these animations. How you achieve each of the three will depend on what version of Max you have. The second animation could be accomplished with spline animations which are turned in to solids, then animated. The third animation, with the smoke, appears to have been done with FumeFX, a third party plugin. The first animation is using soft bodies, and MassFX, in the newer versions of Max, or Reactor, in the older versions, could be used. Reactor shipped fully integrated with 3ds max from versions 5 to 2011. In 3ds max 2012, Reactor was replaced by a PhysX-based engine called MassFX.

The second animation can be done (depending on your version of Max) with no third-party plugins. That said, as a beginner, none of them are a good place to start. I suggest that you start with the included Max tutorials for your particular version, and also use the Autodesk Youtube 3DS Max channel:

Thank you very much Joseph! With enough time and determination hopefully I'll be on my way to being able to make these myself. Also exploring Cinema4D for creating animations like this.

Good luck with it Anna! While talent helps, it's more a matter of hard work and study, copying others' work, then developing your own style.
