How to adjust starting times of animated Xref objects?

Let's say I made a character clapping his hands. I want to import it as an xref in another scene and clone it multiple times. Is there a way I can adjust the starting time of each cloned xref object so that they're not all clapping in unison? Given that there are no movable keyframes in an xref object.

Tricky one.

What I would do is save multiple .max files of the same scene, with different timed clapping,
then xref those in.
