 | Ocean lume to mesh geometry

I would like the flexibility of having the gorgeous effect of Mental Ray's ocean shader converted to the rigid geometry of a mesh. Is there a way to do that? I have been trying to do this via the Displacement Modifier, without luck.

Tell me, do you want to have a wave height as in viewport show the height of waves. if yes then there is a plugin in "final renderer" of Fr-Ocean which gives the thing i am talking about.
but if want to make it as in have a boat react to it then i cannot help on this since i never done it in 3d max. Maya has that option.
