I am trying to model a slide in 3ds max. It starts as a tube, about 10% of the distance the tube merges into a slide, sort of like a water slide, where you go through a tunnel and then emerge out in an open slide.

I am totally stuck, the tube to slide transition is proving to be very tough, I have tried nurbs, lofts and poly editing, none give smooth result.
Please suggest something.

Try modeling just a tube - then make the tube an editable poly - then select the polys where you want the slide to open up and delete them - then cap the open spots where you deleted the parts of the tube. To finish, you might do a turbo-smooth modifier on it.

Thank you for your suggestion, how to I cap the holes. Do I have to craw the faces one by one or is there a simpler method?

I believe that the poly modeling toolset has the ability to just select the spline that outlines the hole and cap that.
