3ds Max Ground Collapse

Hello, I am a VFX artist and I am trying to achieve an effects where the ground collapses. I figured that the way I would come about doing this would be to take the footage 3d track it, bring it into 3ds max, recreate the ground and then use a camera map modifier to get the material from the ground, then fracture the ground as needed. This all sounded great, but when I did the camera mapping and fractured the geometry the material did not stick with the geometry, for example if the debris went from the ground over grass the geometry would have the grass texture. Anybody have a solution?
